2016 #NCTMannual reflection: Purpose

There is a lot to process from NCTM 2016. Being a contributor for the Global Math Department this week, I decided to feature snippets on the blog here in order to kill two birds with one stone.

I found it useful to connect all the NCTM goodness with a theme: PURPOSE.

Be purposeful about what we want our students to do. I loved this slide, connecting reading and math:

This idea lends itself to students discovering properties in math. Often, when things get discovered in math, they are named after the discoverer. Why don't we do this more with students?"

Be purposeful in framing the task so it "invites everyone in." Furthermore, ask purposeful questions when working with students during problem-solving tasks. Lastly, it's critical for the teacher to explain the goals because it's hard to have a conversation if it's unclear what you're trying to accomplish.

Be purposeful in the feedback we give students after they make mistakes. Thanks to Robert Berry and Dylan Wiliam, I shared with teachers the importance of providing feedback that benefits students and at the same time challenging them to take traditional feedback and rework it so it's better at moving the learning forward.

• Christina Tondevold (@BuildMathMinds):
Be purposeful in working toward the terminology in the standards, specifically "fluently" and "using strategies" in the K-5 standards. We looked at examples of subitizing, cardinality, and strategies like making ten, double-plus-one, finding fives. We need to be purposeful in students making sense of math for themselves.

• Jason Zimba
Be purposeful in decluttering what we teach, what we ask of students, and what we give to students. Something he got me thinking about: do we Math 8 teachers need to teach the "elimination" process when solving linear systems. Does the procedure support the conceptual understanding? and can we allow high school teachers to teach it while Math 8 teachers focus on graphing and substitution?

2015 Ignite at NWMC

I delivered my second Ignite Talk at the 54th Annual Northwest Mathematics Conference in Whistler, Canada this past weekend.

I start my Ignite saying:
Take 10 seconds to think of the most forgettable parts of your math class.

I am so grateful for the wonderful BCAMT program committee (<---follow them). They worked extremely hard to put a great conference together. Thank you Chris, Marc, Sandra, and Selina for inviting me out. Whistler is so beautiful this time of year and I learned a lot from the great sessions and speakers. It was a pleasure to hang with some old math friends and make new ones too!


There were some other great Ignite talks and I hope that someone part of the BCAMT was able to record them in order to post online. To the entire Ignite team: Marian, Ron, Robert, Allison, Janice, Carole and Marc (emcee). WE DID IT!

OCMC Keynote: Tools for Student Thinking

The wonderful people at Orange County Math Council have asked me to be the Keynote speaker tomorrow night, Monday, October 19, 2015.

OCMC is hosting the 2015-16 Math Tech Night in Tustin, CA a la EdCamp Style. Math teachers will have the chance to share with and learn from other teachers their math tech tools, secrets, and favorites.

The title of my Keynote is: Tools for Student Thinking.

Clothesline

Where do I begin?
I used to have a number line in my old class. But it was static. All of the benchmark numbers were taped to the wall. I used it often, but not often enough.

Flash forward to Chris' workshop last week. He introduced Clothesline using this great quote from Tim McCaffrey:
You better believe my ears perked up when I heard "master number sense maker". Check it out!

When I worked with teachers in Irvine today, my ice breaker was asking the teachers,
"How long does Dyson think it should take you to dry your hands with their machine?" 
I've never posted this picture online because it's my favorite ice breaker to do with teachers at conferences and workshops. However, I will use the context to illustrate how I introduced Clothesline to about 150 teachers, coaches, administrators today.

As teachers were discussing, I went around and asked
  • two teachers for a guess that's too low (3 and 5 seconds)
  • two teachers for a guess that's too high (30 and 40 seconds)
  • four teachers for a guess that's just right
I used a big black marker to write the numbers on the red papers for the first four teachers with their "wrong" answers. I then had them place the red papers on the 25 feet long clothesline hanging on the side wall. I had the last four teachers write their "just right" guesses on the green slips. 

You'll notice the green slips might be hard to read from a distance. I did this on purpose so that we could get the visual effect (from a distance) of placing their green slips accurately on the clothesline using correct spacing (sorry, no pictures), based on where the red slips were originally placed. I reminded the teachers that this is a dynamic number line. You can move the numbers along the clothesline as you please. Please note that the teachers (in this case) were doing all the work, thinking, critiquing, and adjusting. In other words, students should be doing the same in my class as I help facilitate the conversations.

Throughout the rest of the day, I worked with teachers grades 7-12 during three breakout sessions. Therefore, I made a handful of cards for each breakout session to correspond to numbers or expressions relevant to them and their content area. Here's a sample:

I love when Chris used colored papers to focus on the numbers being placed (or in question). Notice the "benchmark" numbers are on white paper.

THE ROPE
The clothesline is 25 feet long. I think this is plenty long. I went to Home Depot and bought a 100 ft. clothesline. I made three cuts to make four lines of 25 feet. I used a flame to burn the ends of the rope so they stay in tact.

THE CLOTHESPINS
I noticed Chris used these to stack equivalent values together vertically. Brilliant. See above for examples that could stack.

THE NUMBERS (or expressions)
NCTM suggests using 3x5 cards, but then you have to use more clothespins, making the number line more static. Chris suggested using strips of paper. Using strips of paper allows the number line to be way more dynamic, allowing the numbers to slide along the clothesline or making it easy to place the numbers or take them off without the use of clothespins.


VARIABLES
Many teachers loved the idea of using variable expressions. Here's how I determined x for each group. I asked the three teachers in possession of the variable expressions to share how long they had been working in the district. For example, three teachers shared 12, 13, and 15 years. Therefore, 40 was the value of our variable, x.

FUTURE USE
Whenever I give a professional development workshop for teachers from now on, I will be using Clothesline. IT'S AWESOME! It is a master number sense maker. If I happen to be at your district or school doing PD, I'll bring a handful of clotheslines to raffle off (or give away). At the end of my last session today, it was awesome to have two excited calculus teachers be extremely thankful for receiving a clothesline. One walked away saying, "I'm going to use this Wednesday." Their first day of school! Calculus!

Last, but not least, test it out at home if you have the chance. My five-year-old son and I had fun this past weekend. He threw me a few surprises.

I just tossed up a few numbers on the clothesline for him to first get acquainted with the idea of numbers on the clothesline. "Move the pieces of paper so they make sense to you."

Clothesline 2
My son caught me off guard when he pursued something he was interested in. 1, 2, 3, 6.
"What?"

Clothesline 3
I wanted to see how my son did with spacing the numbers.
"Show me where four and five go."

How Do You Like Your Bacon (Math Modeling)?

During the past few weeks I've had the pleasure to work with and learn from teachers in various places in the country, facilitating district/school workshop trainings as they prepare for their school year. Part of our time together was working on problem-solving tasks and breaking down Mathematical Practice 4: Model with Mathematics. At some point, either before lunch or in the afternoon, I tossed up this Estimation 180 challenge and asked:
How long to cook the bacon, starting with a cold skillet?

I love this estimation challenge because it showcases many parts of the modeling process, especially the two following parts:
  • Identifying variables
  • Formulating a model
Here's why. Teachers instantly start asking questions like:
  • How do you like your bacon?
    • Crispy, charcoal, or like beef jerky?
  • What type of bacon is it?
    • Turkey bacon or real bacon?
  • Is it thick cut or the other stuff?
  • Is the bacon room temperature, cold, or frozen?
  • Is it cooked on a gas or electric stove?
  • How hot is the flame?
  • What is the percent decrease in size of one strip of bacon?
Teachers are identifying variables and asking for information that matters to them in order to formulate a model. I love it. I have also done this Estimation 180 challenge with students before and they have asked many of these same questions too. I love it.

I had a great conversation with Joe Schwartz and others at TMC15 about state tests lacking what the modeling process demands: asking questions. Why do the SBAC and PARCC tests not have students simply ask questions about scenarios? If we're asking students to identify variables and ask/search for information necessary to formulate a model and solve a problem, why don't tests place more of a focus on this? What if we presented students with scenarios a la the Math Forum and simply have students first submit mathematical questions that could be solved. What if we then followed it up with giving students a list of three to four questions they could solve and they pick one?

Another great conversation I had with Nathan Kraft and others at TMC15 was the idea that direct instruction can have a negative connotation in the MTBoS. A similar notion is that the instructional strategy "I do, we do, you do." also has a negative connotation. With problem-solving and mathematical modeling, direct instruction is not the focus. The focus is conceptual understanding. From my experience, I've learned that timing and placement of direct instruction is what matters. I've been catching up on reading NCTM's Principles to Actions and I highly recommend it to anyone; teachers, coaches, parents, administrators, students, and more. It's about 100 pages. Get on it! I think it paints a pretty clear picture why, how, and when conceptual understanding should take place in relationship to procedural fluency.

Principles to Actions really does a great job driving the point home that procedural fluency is important. However, procedural fluency won't stick nor have significant meaning if the students lack the conceptual understanding first. When I'm done with Principles to Actions and have had a chance to let it simmer in my brain, I plan to blog more about it. I also need to explore the Principles to Actions Professional Learning Toolkit.

Last, and certainly not least is literacy. I'm glad that one teacher at a recent workshop voiced her concern about teaching literacy in math and that the use of multimedia in a 3-Act task or an Estimation 180 challenge really doesn't strengthen literacy. I agree.

Trust me, I'm all about building literacy. However, the more I teach and work with teachers, the more I believe in the importance of making the conceptual understanding accessible first as a means to transitioning to procedural fluency and strengthening literacy by scaffolding. If I don't make the conceptual understanding accessible to my students, than I'm not scaffolding both the mathematical procedural fluency and literacy.

That said, I tried to imagine what Day 185's bacon estimation challenge might look like. I still love the visual and simple question and would still start with the current setup as the introduction to the task. Once students and teachers voice their questions, Act 2 information might be presented in text. Here's what I came up with (I know it could be better):
I have 20 minutes to prepare and eat breakfast before leaving for work. I need to cook 12 pieces of bacon for my family and the skillet only holds 6 pieces at a time. We like our bacon crispy, but not like charcoal. The gas stove will be at a medium to high heat. The first batch of bacon starts to sizzle one and a half minutes after I put the skillet on the lit stove. Five and a half minutes after the bacon starts to sizzle, it is about 65% cooked. Will I have enough time to cook all 12 pieces of bacon?
I'm not sure this blog post brings much closure. However, it has brought a greater focus for me as I prepare for the school year. I am more focused on
  • students asking questions
  • students building conceptual understanding first
  • teachers making conceptual understanding more accessible (as much as possible) 
  • teachers scaffolding their classroom activities and direct instruction to strengthen procedural fluency by building upon conceptual understanding

CA Teachers Summit Ed Talk

I had the honor and privilege to give an Ed Talk at the California Teachers Summit held on Friday, July 31, 2015. Across the state of California, teachers attended college campuses for breakout sessions, Ed Talks, and keynote speakers. I gave an Ed Talk at the Pasadena Convention Center titled, Estimation: A Gateway To Better Number Sense. Check it out.

I also had the privilege of meeting the other two inspiring Ed Talk presenters, Nicol R. Howard and Thema Bryant-Davis. The highlight of the day for me (and my son) was that I got to meet one of the Keynote speakers, astronaut Leland Melvin!

Turning 3 Challenges Into 3 Charges

My next three weeks are slammed with opportunities, via conferences and teacher trainings, to work with fellow teachers, learn from them, and share resources and thoughts about what I'm most passionate about in math education. The great thing about this two-way learning environment is that it will make me even stronger and better equipped for the upcoming school year as I support my fellows in their classroom.

If we're at the same conference or teacher training, you will be hearing me drive home the importance of the following three challenges we face as teachers of students and students of teachers:
  • Problem solving
  • Student thinking
  • Number sense
  • Why are these three challenges so important?
  • Why am I so passionate about lesson design and tech tools that meaningfully support these three challenges?
  • What resources are available to teachers to support students?
  • How do we implement said resources to support problem solving, student thinking, and number sense?
At the end of our time together during a workshop or conference, I hope you become better equipped with strategies, tools, resources, ideas, and inspiration to make them your charges for the upcoming school year.

Thanks in advance for letting me be part of your valuable PD time and for allowing me to absorb your insight and knowledge at the same time.

A Jammed Rational-Irrational War, Stacking Cups Week

Some cool stuff happened this week. Well at least I think it was cool.

Monday
One of my math fellows was observed by other math teachers from our district. He was starting a new unit with rational and irrational numbers, focusing on 8.NS.1 and 2. I might be wrong, but pretty dry stuff… here’s how we spiced it up a little.

We did a pre-assessment using the Post-It Plus app. Yes, my obsession with Post-It notes has gone to a new level: digital. We created a file within the app, posted it on his Haiku calendar, and had the students download the file into their app on their iPad. 

Students first worked individually to sort the terms from least to greatest for a few minutes. Since his students are grouped in fours, they then narrowed it down to one iPad screen they thought was most accurate. (Quick demo)

*Reflection: we should have had students paired up first, discuss, and narrow it down to two screens for the entire group. Next, the whole group of four students would discuss and narrow the two iPad screens down to one screen for the group.

Once each group settled on a screen they felt most confident with, they took a screenshot and uploaded their group’s screenshot to the Padlet page my fellow created for them.

My fellow used this Padlet page to assess the overall climate of the class (without teaching them a single thing). He used this real-time data to have some really rich conversations and share-out of ideas from students.

Remember to tell students:
  • It’s okay if you’re wrong. 
  • Make your best guess.
  • I just want to see what you already might know.
Flash forward to Friday:
The previous weekend I asked the same fellow what he thought about playing War with rational and irrational terms. Side note: I play a few card games with my young son and one of them is War. My fellow thought the idea was epic. He ran with it. Here how he made it awesome:
  • He made these awesome cards.
    • Some values had multiple representations
  • Printed them out on card stock.
  • Made a graphic organizer for students.
  • Each group of four was broken down like this:
    • 2 people played War while the other 2 people recorded and were the judges.
    • The next round, the roles were switched.
  • There were 3 rounds.
  • Each round was 6-10 minutes
  • He stopped class and made a spectacle whenever two students were at war.
  • The third and final round was between the winners of the first two rounds.
I asked if I had his permission to share the cards and he said, “Sure.”

Tuesday:
Another fellow asked me to model Stacking Cups in their first period class, which ran less than 45 minutes. My fellow requested I complete the task with students in one period. I explained that I’ve never “finished” the task in one period because there is so much to explore and learn in the task. I respected the request and  tried to cram it into one period. I spent too much time launching the task. 

Act 2 (the best part) felt rushed and we still didn't finish. My fellow and I debriefed and made some adjustments so she could finish it with her next period. She stuck to the adjustments and did a fantastic job facilitating the task. The students were doing awesome and amazing math during Act 2… and what do you know? The class was over. I love that my fellow was going to revisit the task the next day. Could we have spent another day on the task? Yes. It’s a starting point and I’m very proud of my fellow for trying out something new and doing a great job. I’d say the sweet spot would be one-and-a-half days for this task...
*Side note: I encourage you do styrofoam cups earlier in the year, and use Stacking Cups throughout the entire linear systems unit.

Thursday:
Another teacher wanted me to model Stacking Cups as well. When we sat down to plan, she was totally cool with spending one-and-a-half days on the task. Great news!
I launched the task, used a Padlet page to capture what they noticed. I asked the question, "Where will they tie?" and used a Google form to collect their guesses (see my post on using Google forms to collect student thinking). 

We gave each group only 4 white styrofoam cups. Students were making tables, or writing equations, or some were even wanting to graph their equations. Interesting note: some students started their table with zero cups having a height of 9.2 centimeters. The teacher had only taught graphing systems, so students were already thinking ahead to substitution. It was awesome. She did a wonderful job facilitating her first 3-Act task. We didn’t finish the task in one period, but it felt right knowing we had another half-day to wrap up the task.

After work, I started putting the meat in my upcoming session, Math Mistakes and Error Analysis: Diamonds in the Rough. Although I will be showcasing a couple ways I’ve had success with error analysis with students, I love that I’ll be showcasing some awesome work and contributions from:

Ask Your Students About 3 Pictures

A few months ago, I asked for some input regarding your experience with photocopiers as I prepare for a session on error analysis. Thanks for all your help and input. As I continue my preparation, I asked Twitter to share three things you noticed about these three pics.




With over 70 responses, the results have been fun to look at. My session is about effectively using error analysis. One small part I'm curious about is if we can make any generalizations about spotting things that seem out of place. Are we conditioned to look for flaws, or is it something we innately do?
Next phase: I'm curious what students see. If you can put this questionnaire in front of your students, I'd be super appreciative. It's anonymous. Just give them the survey and don't tell them anything other than what are two things they notice about each picture. Maybe it'll foster some discussion in your classrooms after they take it.

iPad Summit 2015

Last week, I had the extreme pleasure to co-present with my friend and colleague, JR Ginex-Orinion, who tweets at @gochemonline <---Instant follow! Our presentation was at the San Diego iPad Summit put on by EdTechTeacher.

That's a lot of links in those last two sentences, right? Here's one more: our presentation slide deck. Feel free to look through it and contact one of us if you have any questions.

Our session, Quick and Powerful Assessment Tools for the iPad, had the following goals:
  • share why it's important to use assessment tools
  • present four assessment tools
  • give attendees a hands-on experience with each tool
  • mention shortcomings and suggested uses for each app
  • provide time for Q & A
With about 120 attendees and an hour, we had our work cut out for us. However, I think JR will agree that we effectively met our goals and had fun with all the attendees. My intention is to share a few highlights from the session and not recap the whole thing.

Why?
My good buddy, Robert has encouraged me to address the "why" part of a presentation and I'm really appreciative for this encouragement. As we told the attendees, it's easy for us to show you what the assessment tools are and how to use them, but let's first focus on why we should use them.

We talked about why it's important to use assessment tools because they:
  • are a window (not a glass house) into student thinking
  • can tell a story about your students
  • should be informative (to guide your instruction) and
  • should be efficient
The tools we presented were:

I won't deny it. I think we saved the best for last. Pear Deck was definitely a crowd favorite. Ironically, we had to throw it in last minute because our originally planned tool, Infuse Learning, will be stopping their service in April. Pear Deck is such a great tool for capturing student thinking. I highly recommend you check it out and give it a test run in your class. 

All in all, it was a fun conference. I picked up some inspiration from Doug Kiang's keynote and Sabba Quidwai's session. More importantly, I look forward to presenting with JR again in the future sometime!

Photocopier Survey RESULTS

In preparing for 2015, I asked for your help the other day. Thanks for entertaining my hunch.
Here are the questions and results (from 65 people):

Question: What are the joys of a photocopier?
You had many great things to share about the efficiency of providing your students with copies and some of the detailed functions of the machine. An interesting number of you find joy in the warmth of the copies (I'll admit, me too). Some of you veteran teachers shared how you appreciate the evolution of photocopy machines. Here are a few of my favorite "joys" quotes:
  • The smell of ozone, the warmth of fresh copies, and the feeling that I'm ready.
  • I usually bounce/jam to the rhythm as I wait for my copies...
  • Solving a paper jam. 

Question: What are the frustrations of a photocopier?
Overwhelmingly, paper jams are the most frustrating part of a photocopier according to you. I would say low toner and long lines are on the heels of paper jams. Here are a few of my favorite "frustrations" quotes:
  • Remembering my code
  • When it thinks it knows BETTER than you what size paper you want.
  • Time lost from my life that I will never get back.
First-world problems, right? The next set of questions asked about your feelings, using a Likert scale from one to five.


Question: When the photocopier is functioning, what's your level of satisfaction?
1 = Not satisfied
5 = Extremely Satisfied
Close to 60 people felt satisfied to extremely satisfied.


Question: When the photocopier is malfunctioning, what's your level of satisfaction?
Over 50 people felt little to no satisfaction.


Question: What's your alert level when the photocopier is functioning?
1 = Ho-Hum
5 = High Alert
Varied data, but most seemed to lean toward Ho-Hum.


Question: What's your alert level when the photocopier is malfunctioning?
I'd say close to 50 people felt some alert to high alert. 


Select any feeling(s) you associate with the photocopier malfunctioning.


Select an initial step you typically take if a photocopier malfunctions on your watch.
Let me translate. Most answered that they "Try and fix it (replace ink, clear paper jam, etc.)


Select any feeling(s) you associate with YOU fixing the photocopier.
Look at that! Accomplished! Happy!
We have to respect that there are times we still feel frustrated, maybe even excited.


Here's where I'm headed. 

  • Can any of these feelings or photocopier experiences be similar to learning math?
  • Is fixing a photocopier error analysis?
  • Are there times students just go through the typical process at a ho-hum alert level?
  • Are students given opportunities to be problem-solvers?
  • Are students frustrated with math?
  • Are students frustrated when problem-solving, but persevere and feel accomplished, happy, and excited at the point of resolution?
I have many more thoughts and questions. My goal for 2015 is to provide teachers with a conference workshop/session where we use error analysis as one way to help students better learn and understand math. I've blogged about this a couple of times (Exponents and Linear Systems), but want to continue exploring this arena.

CMC 2014 Pregame

Get Students to Argue in Math Class

I recently submitted my speaker proposals for both 2014 CMC conferences. One of my proposals is for the following session:
Title: "Get Students Arguing in Math Class with Number Sense Activities."
Description: Get students to productively argue about math situations. Participate in number sense activities requiring students to construct viable arguments, critique the reasoning of others, and use sense-making. Get ready to throw down.

I also had to answer a few questions justifying the session and connecting it to the CCSS and 8 Mathematical Practices. I provided the following connection:
The presenter will use number sense activities to get participants to construct viable arguments and share their reasoning like students. Using presenter-made tasks (Estimation 180) and other online resources appropriate for grades 3-8, attendees will be able to see the importance of student reasoning and creating productive discourse in the classroom. Teachers will also be provided with sentence frames and stems for all students, especially English language learners.

I'm really excited at the thought of this session getting accepted so I figured I would jot down a few ideas here and see what you all have to contribute. Even if I'm not accepted, I think every math class has to have students productively arguing at times. Doing estimation challenges with my students has been so beneficial for them to get better at the art of arguing. However, I know it could be better. I'm not sure if you've ever experienced it before, but it's a treat to stand off to the side or in back of a group of students arguing about a question in math. They have no idea you're nearby because they are so caught up in the argument. Don't get me wrong, it's not like they're swearing at each other and calling each other names. They are having a rich discussion, sharing conjectures, examples, counterexamples, etc. and I have the pleasure of spectating. I usually turn to an innocent bystander (nearby student) and whisper, "Awesome, look at them arguing. Isn't it great?" The student usually looks shocked that I'm happy their classmates are arguing. I love it!

I'd like this session to place a big emphasis on two mathematical practices:
MP 3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP 1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

I plan to break these two practices down more in my session. For now, I feel I need to focus on three major parts to arguments: having excellent content, capturing the arguments, and indirect facilitation.

Content: There's a wealth of content available, but I think the more controversial the point of contention, the better. One of my favorite moments in math class was when we did Mathalicious' Datelines lesson. Students were arguing about which celebrity shouldn't date another celebrity because of the age discrepancy. Some students disagreed about the rule of (n/2) + 7, especially since I was teaching 14 year-olds at the time. It was awesome.

These don't have to be full-on lessons. They can be warm-ups, math talks, used during classroom transitions or to break up your direct instruction, etc. I'm really looking forward to using @MathCurmudgeon's site MathArguments180.com

Another up and coming resource is Open Middle by Robert Kaplinsky and Nanette Johnson.

What resources would you add to my content list?

Capture: I need to capture these arguments for a few reasons. Students need to listen to other students argue, especially from different classes. My memory is very porous, and I can't remember what students say verbatim. Students can listen to the recordings and pick a side, or provide their own agreement or dissent. I'd also love to share student arguments with other teachers, especially at this session. How do I capture this?

I just downloaded Voice Memos for iPad onto my school iPad. I will test it out next week with students. Wish me luck. Here are the features I'm optimistic about:
  • It will record in the background while another app is running.
  • It was $1.
  • I can pause the recording.
  • I can trim audio clips.
  • I can sync with Dropbox.
Have any tips for capturing student arguments?

Facilitation: Here's where I need to do a better job. For many of my students, English can get in the way of them articulating their point. I'd like for students to listen better to each other and respond accordingly. I want to hear what they have to say. I want them to be a contender in their disagreement, but I don't want them to be held back because of language deficiencies. Therefore, I need to provide them with sentence starters and stems. Fortunately, these can be used with any student. Here's a few:
  • My opinion about this is _____________.
  • I could argue that _____________.
  • I disagree with your statement that _____________ because _____________.
Have any stems or sentence frames you're already using with students to help them articulate their thoughts?

Presentations & Workshops

Last month I added the Lessons page to Estimation 180 so you can quickly access lessons I've made. I will continue to add lessons as I make them and host them in that space.
This month, I'm adding a Presentations & Workshops page to the site. Since last November, I've been fortunate to work with some amazing math teachers at conferences and workshops. I've learned a lot and have truly enjoyed doing math with teachers as we share instructional strategies and lessons. My goal is to help support math teachers in strengthening their instructional tool belt for the Common Core classroom.

CMC North 2013

Here's a recap of my CMC North experience from last weekend. 

Friday:
Fawn Nguyen and I flew up to Monterey Bay, checked in, and found the Fishwife restaurant for lunch. It was within walking distance of the conference grounds. Thank goodness because it was a little chilly outside. We enjoyed lunch so much we made a trip back there for the 4-6 p.m. Happy Hour so we could fine-tune our Saturday presentation. We checked in with the CMC people, and if you ever make it up to Pacific Grove for the conference, don't forget the badge they mail you. It'll cost you $5 if you forget it, right Fawn?

Later that night, we attended the opening keynote by Dr. David Dockterman where he discussed the importance of a growth mindset.  Afterward, it was great to see and meet up with Fawn, Dan Meyer, Avery Pickford, and Breedeen Murray for some pizza. Good times. Good company.

Saturday:
Session 1:
The first session I attended was titled Using Formative Assessment to Create Equitable Practices by Karen Mayfield-Ingram. We diagnosed some student work and left with the following reminders:
1) Make a concerted effort to give students detailed feedback on any assessment.
2) Try and ask students questions that will encourage them to analyze their work better.

Session 2:
I showed up early at Larry Armstrong's session titled Flip Instruction to Transform Learning. I'm interested to know more about the flipped classroom. Not because I'm sold on the idea, but because my district is getting iPads the second semester and I have a feeling we will be encouraged to implement some type of flipped classroom model. Who knows? Again, I'm not sold on the idea, but I want more information just in case. Well, it's 5 minutes before the start of the session and the front of the room is empty: no computer plugged into the projector, no one is setting up, no Larry Armstrong. Nothing!
A CMC helper comes to the front to inform us Armstrong won't be presenting and we have time to catch another session if we want. I saw Brad Fulton come in at the back of the room and I got up to ask him if he'd present, but he said he was only coming to drop his stuff off for presenting at the following session. I turned to the CMC helper and offered to present my Number Sense session I gave at CMC South. She took me up on my offer and we had ourselves an impromptu Number Sense session. It was fun! For the forty to fifty attendees that stuck around, we had a blast doing estimation challenges and talking number sense for about 50 minutes. I will blog more about my presentation over the next few weeks. Stay tuned! I was honored when Rebecca Lewis, the Program Chair, gave me this token of appreciation for stepping in at this session. This proudly sits on my desk.

Session 3:
Shelly Lawson gave a great hands-on session titled Modeling Lessons Can Work for All Students - Yes, Even Yours.  I was excited about this one because it was geared toward 7th grade curriculum. You know you're in for a good session when you see a bag full of PVC pipes, a stopwatch, a meter stick, a steel ball, and some string. There were 5 different length PVC pipes, and four connecters; two right angles and two at about 135 degrees.

We had to construct a pipe so that the ball, when dropped, would make its way through the pipe at the fastest rate possible. Here's our contraption. It was the fastest because of my teammate's design. Great job Bob!

Shelly also introduced us to the Incredible Egg, Float That Boat, and the Penny Lab. All of these activities allow students to make measurements, mistakes, and formulate conclusions based on observations and data collected. I left with a packet full of hands-on activities that I can incorporate into my curriculum. The structure of the packet gives students pretty detailed steps and instructions. Personally, I will probably revise the activities to leave them a little more open-ended and less structured. Overall, some great activities. Email Shelly for a copy. See the link attached to her name above. By this time, I think I ran into Dittmer about 50 times. Really cool guy!

Session 4:
Fawn and I presented Hotel Snap to the CMC attendees. Fawn is awesome! Tell you something you don't know, right? Okay, chances are good you've already read her blog post on Hotel Snap. If not, go now and read it here. Fawn did an amazing job coming up with this task. You might be surprised, but I have nothing but great things to say about Fawn. Her task is challenging and can be used at numerous grade levels. CHECK IT OUT!

Session 5:
My man, Max Ray, presented Becoming Better Reasoners: Supporting Students to Develop as Problem-Solvers. I was excited since this was my first time seeing Max present.  See how calm he is in this picture?

I love how Max is so patient and allows his students (us CMC attendees) to formulate noticings, wonderings, and other thoughts as we worked through some Math Forum tasks. I enjoyed this last session of the conference because we worked in groups to problem-solve a task, we analyzed student work, and Max charged us with asking students questions that would help them further their problem-solving approach by becoming better reasoners. Well done Max!

Saturday night:
Ignite talks!!! I could write a whole other blog post on these. I was honored and privileged to present with the following mathletes!

The Math Forum organized, hosted, and took over the Ignite talks this year. Thanks Suzanne for all you did! Watch them in January or February 2014 when they post the 10 videos online. It was a lot of work preparing my 5 minute talk, but was great fun! Fawn stole the night! The energy and inspiration from these talks was a great way to cap Saturday night!

Sunday:
Dan Meyer gave the first keynote of the morning titled Fake-World Math. Dan is the man! His presentation was fantastic. I don't want to post any spoilers here, but he talked about the importance of modeling and how CCSS defines modeling. If I could summarize some important points, here's what I want to reflect on for future reference.
Although important to the math classroom at certain times, the following is NOT modeling:

  1. I do, we do, you do
  2. Using concrete manipulatives
  3. Graphs, equations, functions
Furthermore, Dan stressed that the real world is not always greater than a math problem. Vice versa, a math problem is not always greater than a real world situation. He emphasized that strong modeling starts with a simple question and allows students to identify variables, formulate the necessary model to organize and solve the task, and to validate conclusions a la something along the lines of a 3-Act task. He reminded everyone that modeling tasks are out there: Dan, Robert, and here. My summary can't do justice to his presentation, content delivery, and charisma. If you get a chance to see Dan live, DO IT!
*For the record, my initial estimate for Dan's Super Stairs task was over by fifty seconds. Bam!

Dr. Timothy Kanold gave the second keynote titled The Art of Teaching Mathematics: Inspiring Students to Learn. CMC North 2013 ended with Bill Withers' Lean on Me.

Before Fawn and I flew back to Los Angeles, we had brunch with some great math amigos (pictured below).
